Abstract
Purpose. The purpose of this exploratory qualitative study was to examine the general understanding of certified educators in the area of Tourette Syndrome and the impact of teacher preparedness on students living with the disorder. This study was significant due to the fact that there is insufficient research on the impact of teacher preparation on students living with Tourette syndrome. Methods. The research question for this study investigated the level of understanding and exposure of secondary educators in the area of Tourette syndrome. The participants included certified, secondary educators in two large public-school districts in the state of Ohio. The combination of survey and one-on-one interviews provided insight into specific experiences and perceptions of the educator's ability to support students living with Tourette syndrome. Results. A total of six themes were identified as critical components concerning the impact educators can have on students diagnosed with Tourette syndrome: (a) lack of/limited general knowledge (b) lack of preparedness (c) limited professional experiences (d) professional roles and responsibilities (e) support systems (f) suggested changes. Essentially, the themes unearthed demonstrated a belief that teachers are not effectively educated on the fundamentals of Tourette syndrome or appropriately prepared to support a child living with the neurodevelopmental disorder. Additionally, it was established that educators are not participating in training specifically geared toward supporting students diagnosed with Tourette's and college preparatory and educator induction programs are inadequate in this area as well.
