Children and adolescents with asthma are at a heightened risk for developing language, literacy, and cognitive deficits. However, there is limited research focusing on young children with asthma and limited research utilizing detailed assessments of emergent literacy and language skills. The current study aims to explore the effects of asthma on young children’s academic abilities, as well as the effects of socioeconomic status (SES) and the home literacy environment (HLE). Nineteen children without asthma and five children with asthma completed standardized assessments and were filmed reading with their parents. Parents filled out surveys examining family demographics and the HLE. Results indicate that asthma does not significantly affect scores on developmental measures and that SES is not a predictor of performance on assessments. However, children with asthma are read to significantly less often than their peers without asthma and showed a trend towards a weaker HLE. While academic differences have not yet emerged between children with and without asthma in preschool, potential differences in the HLE and lack of exposure to literacy may eventually result in children with asthma developing lower literacy skills. Parents of young children with asthma should be encouraged to increase shared book reading activities in the home.
