Examining the Relationship of Teacher Efficacy and Student Achievement in Connection to Early Literacy

Abstract Details

2020, Doctor of Education, Miami University, Educational Leadership.
Providing strong instruction in the early years of a child's education is one of the most important and challenging jobs educators face. Research has emphasized the influence a teacher has when students are first learning to read and write. Students' ability to read and write stems largely from their cognitive abilities and from their individual beliefs that they are capable of success (Guo, Connor, Yang, Roehrig, & Morrison, 2012). Teachers in grades kindergarten through third grade in a suburban Ohio district were asked to participate in observations and subsequent interviews following an analysis of a three year reading growth data trend. Those that chose to participate were all teachers with at least three years of experience teaching reading to students in K-3. Three prevalent themes emerged from this research study: active, purposeful, engaged reading, social support and knowledge building. The results of this study allowed me the opportunity to recognize the importance that efficacy places in the early literacy classrooms and to act upon the need for additional research and recommendations in this area. Many teachers underestimate their abilities and cannot see themselves for the true classroom hero they are. On the other hand, some teachers overestimate their effectiveness contributing to under performing students and gaps in learning. This study ultimately provided me with evidence that supports the need for additional growth in the areas of efficacy, at a minimum in our early literacy classrooms, with potential needs throughout all K-12 classrooms.
