A Relational Study of Executive Functioning Skills and Responses to Early Literacy Interventions

Abstract Details

2020, Doctor of Education, Miami University, Educational Leadership.
At least since the launch of Sputnik, education in the United States has been under considerable scrutiny. Each political candidate has a policy for education reform. Despite various efforts, we still struggle as a nation to meet the needs of our youngest learners, especially in the area of reading. Districts spend large amounts of money on intervention support and programs with the intention of closing the literacy gap between high achievers and low achievers. Paralleling studies of early literacy are studies of how the brain works. Much has been learned in recent years regarding how executive functioning skills impact daily life and learning. How might these two fields of study be brought together? For example, what is the relationship between literacy learning and executive functioning? This study utilizes quantitative methods to explore these relationships and, potentially, initiate reflection and change processes among educators in regard to how we approach early literacy instruction and intervention. This small-scale study reveals the potential relationship between executive functioning and literacy through a correlational process. It is hoped that this study might initiate further research and consideration regarding how to intervene when gaps in early literacy skills emerge.
