Abstract
The school-to-prison pipeline (STPP) refers to school disciplinary policies that push students out of schools and into prisons. The STPP disproportionality affects African American male students. Teachers implicit racial bias is one factor that may contribute to racial disparities in the STPP. The present study examined whether pre-service teachers demonstrated implicit biases against African American male students in a fictionalized vignette about student behavior with regard to: perceived appropriateness of the behavior, likelihood of referral to the office, suspension/expulsion, or school-based mental health service, potential for similar or intensified behavior in the future, likelihood of ending up in the criminal justice system, and degree of surveillance of student in the future. It was hypothesized that pre-service teachers would demonstrate implicit biases against African American male students. Participants were randomly assigned to one of two vignette conditions, which varied based on the implied race of the student (i.e., African American or Caucasian male student vignette). The results found that there were no significant differences between the two conditions on any item. Limitations of the study, as well as implications for future research, are highlighted.
