Reading Reiser in the 21st Century

Abstract Details

2020, Master of Arts, Miami University, French.
This thesis deals with Jean-Marc Reiser's work and its foresightedness when it comes to understanding social structures in the 21st century. Born Jean-Marc Roussillon in Rehon, Meurthe-et-Moselle, Reiser gave, through his artwork, the impression of something that is not completely finished, as well as being overly simple. Early examples of work show that he knew how to draw in a more refined way, but deliberately chose an unsophisticated aesthetic. Evolving mainly within the left-leaning artistic circles of Hara-Kiri and Charlie Hebdo, his apparent goal was to attack all taboos. As he criticized the military, the nuclear lobby, the church and many other power structures, he adopted a deliberate form of dark and vulgar humor. Over time, Reiser's drawings had a considerable influence on other authors and artists. The main point of this thesis is to analyze Reiser's work in the light of 21st century theories about society.
