While there is consensus in the literature that high task-orientation athletes are more efficacious than high ego-orientation athletes, it is currently unknown what mechanism leads to differences in self-efficacy among the goal orientation styles. Based on the adaptive reactions which self-compassion promotes among athletes dealing with failure, the current study aimed to investigate whether self-compassion mediates the relationship between the orientation styles and self-efficacy. A total of 418 NCAA Division I male and female student-athletes (M = 20.19, SD = 1.30) from a variety of sport and universities across the United States, completed the Self-Compassion Scale (Athlete-Version), the Task and Ego Orientation in Sport Questionnaire, and the Trait-Sport Confidence Inventory. Structure equation models suggest that task-orientation has both a direct effect on self-efficacy as well as an indirect effect through self-compassion. Further, while there was no direct effect between ego-orientation and self-efficacy, the results indicated an indirect effect through self-compassion. This study enhances our understanding of the process through which task-orientation enhances, while ego-orientation diminishes, self-efficacy.
