Feminist Reclamations of the Patriarchal Representation of Linear Time in Film and Literature

The focus of this thesis is to investigate the multiple (and often biased) ways in which time is represented. By focusing primarily on film, I seek to define a patriarchal representation of linear time that oppresses the bodies and voices of women through the production of sensation. In particular, Agnes Varda’s film Cleo de 5 a 7 and the Hulu series The Handmaid's Tale demonstrates the paralyzing power of scopophilia and violent sensation produced on the female body in order to objectify and silence women as well as repress their own agency over their senses. In short, the patriarchal representation of linear time is written on the female body. My argument then transitions to the resistance against this closed representation of linear time, in particular, through heterogeneous lived time. I identify lived time as the body's interaction with time and experience free of the hermeneutics of the patriarchy. Through the study of the Annie Ernaux's novel Memoire de fille and Marguerite Duras' novels Le ravissement de Lol V. Stein and L'amant, I seek to highlight how expressing one';s lived time both undermines this closed representation but also allows one to rewrite a more open representation of linear time.
