Abstract Details

2021, Master of Music Performance, Miami University, Music.
Discussing if and/or why there were marked differences in the treatment of African-American musicians, in the late 19th century and early 20th century specifically 1871 to 1923, who traveled to Europe juxtaposed to the treatment of said persons in America. Using the research methodology of text analysis, we will discuss minstrelsy in America, the climate surrounding blacks in Europe, specifically England, and the concertizing travels of the Fisk Jubilee Singers and the American tenor Roland Hayes.
