Interaction of Attachment and Self-Determination Need Fulfillment to Predict Daily Support Behaviors

Attachment and need fulfillment influence support behaviors, but interactions between the two have not been tested. The current study tests main effects of attachment orientations and need fulfillment, as well as their interaction, on support seeking, provision, and receipt. Attachment anxiety was predicted to be positively associated with support seeking and provision, but negatively associated with support receipt. Attachment avoidance was predicted to be negatively associated with all support behaviors. Self- determination need fulfillment was predicted to be positively associated with all support behaviors. Self-determination need fulfillment was predicted to moderate the effects of attachment, such that the effects of insecurity would be more extreme when need fulfillment was low. Romantic couples completed a background survey and 14 daily diary days asking about their attachment orientations, need fulfillment, and support behaviors. This study replicated some known effects of attachment on support and showed self-determination need fulfillment was positively associated with all support behaviors. A significant interaction between anxiety and need fulfillment predicting support provision emerged, such that attachment anxiety was negatively associated with support provision only when need fulfillment was high. This study replicates prior research and provides novel findings that can help couples improve support transactions.
