Abstract Details

2015, M.A. (Master of Arts in English), Ohio Dominican University, English.
The introduction and inclusion of women war-writers into the canon of World War I literature has been a slow moving process. Although women never fought on the front lines, their participation in and observations of the First World War provide readers and scholars with a different viewpoint of the war. Through an exploration of history, content, and voices present in female war-writing, I argue that World War I female authors are an important voice in literary history. Female war literature is relevant to understanding the history and culture of the First World War. Such literature should be valued for its unique perspective and voice in terms of reading, research, and literary criticism. Finally, teachers, researchers, and scholars need to be more deliberate in focusing on female war writing through the processes of researching, educating, and creating digital platforms such as multimedia archives focused on increasing access and awareness of female World War I authors.
