In the present study, the interaction of inhibitor film and iron carbonate scale in CO 2 corrosion has been investigated using electrochemical techniques. The experiments were designed to see the interaction of the inhibitor film and the iron carbonate scale under various stages of iron carbonate scale growth. The inhibitors used were generic imidazoline based inhibitors. The experiments were conducted in a glass cell at an iron carbonate supersaturation range of 7-150. Different inhibitor concentrations were used at various stages of scale formation.
It is observed that the addition of the inhibitor hinders the corrosion rate as well as hampers the precipitation of the iron carbonate scale. This might be due to the lower concentration of Fe ++ at the metal surface and/or scale inhibition properties of the inhibitor. Under the conditions studied, there was no antagonism between the inhibitor and the iron carbonate scale.
