As a consequence of the rapid advances in computer and computer networking technologies, the amount of time available to test new protocols has been greatly reduced. This paradox underscores the need for a method to test new protocols in realistic network environments while maintaining network integrity. TrafGen, a statis-tically accurate artificial network traffic generator, can create artificial network traffic that accurately models traffic measured on real networks. This allows researchers to test protocols in "live" environments, as well as environments with highly customized traffic patterns, thus eliminating the need for a particular network environment to occur naturally. TrafGen works using a conversation level model that models traffic at the connection level, rather than the packet level that provides a greater deal of flexibility to the emulator. TrafGen is able to process overall traffic patterns giving it the freedom to create unique traffic based on monitored patterns, and not simply regurgitating observed packet sequences.
