The present research analyzes the impact of the deregulation of the electric power industry in the United States on the efficiency of electricity generation and the level of emissions attributed to electricity generation. The concepts of econometrics and regression analysis are used as a basis for the empirical analysis. The results of the research suggest that there is a significant and positive relationship between deregulation and the efficiency of electricity generation, i.e. deregulation stimulates the improvement in the efficiency of electricity production. Furthermore, the results indicate that deregulation appears to be significant in reducing the level of sulfur dioxide and carbon dioxide emissions attributed to electricity generation per dollar of gross domestic product. However there is no evidence that deregulation reduces the level of nitrogen oxides emissions attributed to electricity generation.
