A Model to Predict Ohio University Student Attrition from Admissions and Involvement Data

First-year student retention rates have recently become a focus at Ohio University. Dropping retention rates demonstrate the need for an objective way to identify students at risk of attrition to allow the university to best allocate retention resources. In this research, statistical modeling is tested as a method for predicting first-year student attrition at Ohio University given admissions and involvement survey data. Various linear regression, logistic regression, and alternating decision tree models using information available during several points along the school year timeline and several student subsets were developed. All models were analyzed for prediction accuracy and result usability. The results of this analysis showed that several of the developed models had the ability to predict a significant number of students to leave the university with moderate attrition prediction accuracy. The application of these models would aid Ohio University in understanding student's attrition decisions and making retention resources assignments.
