This research identified psychosocial factors related to motivation to change in adolescents completing residential treatment for substance use disorders. Using a naturalistic longitudinal study design, adolescents in a residential treatment program in South East Ohio were assessed at intake and discharge through self-administered questionnaires that assessed coping strategies used to refrain from alcohol/substance use, coping self-efficacy, social support, and motivation to change drug and alcohol use. The 95 participants (mean age=16.0, range=12 to 18) were predominantly white (90%) and male (72%). Over the course of treatment (average length of treatment=53.3 days), adolescents reported significant increases in motivation to change, problem-focused coping and coping self-efficacy. Regression analysis revealed that adolescents who reported higher post-treatment levels of motivation to change reported greater levels of post-treatment emotion-focused coping, and increased self-efficacy and social support. Findings suggests that adolescents in residential treatment programs for substance use disorders may benefit from coping interventions aimed at increasing emotion-focused coping, self-efficacy strategies and social support to increase motivation to change substance use.
