Confronting Stereotypes: Integrating the Social Issue of Stereotypes Within the Art Curriculum

Debeljak, Anne F.

Abstract Details

2009, Master of Arts (MA), Ohio University, Art Education (Fine Arts).
This thesis illustrates the significance and purpose of bringing the social issue of stereotypes into a seventh grade art classroom. The research was conducted usingqualitative research methodology along with an action research case study where the researcher taught the lesson as well as observed, analyzed data and recorded the findings. After analyzing the data, this thesis concludes the classroom is an appropriate setting for such a discussion and art making assisted the students in understanding and illustrating their feelings in a more concrete manner. The classroom lesson was based off of Guillermo Gómez-Peña’s artwork and philosophies and focused on the stereotypes of the Mexican/Mexican-American culture. Other art educators who feel the classroom is a perfect venue to speak of social issues are included as well. Educators today can use this thesis as a stepping-stone for bringing other controversial issues into the classroom.
