Exploring the Attitudes of Higher Learning Communities in the US Towards On-Campus Golf Courses

Studies about general campus recreation have presented both functions and benefits. On-campus golf courses are special recreation facilities because of sizes and management issues. However, very few studies were found. This study as aimed to categorize perceived benefits and attitudes towards on-campus golf courses. Sixty-nine articles concerning on-campus golf course in 24 institutions and 17 articles concerning the Ohio University golf course project were collected. Qualitative research methods were used to categorize and test emerging themes. ANOVA was used to test the significance level of differences among groups. This study presented 11 perceived benefits, 12 positive attitudes and 10 negative attitudes. Results indicated that on-campus golf courses shared benefits with other recreation facilities, and had more perceived benefits for local community. No significant difference was found among institutions included in this study. The results provide information for future studies and project developers.
