Abstract
To understand the architecture of a people, it is important to take those people's worldview into consideration, as worldview plays significant roles in constructing how people perceive things. This thesis argues that architecture is capable of expressing identity as the structure of a building, its appearance, and location in a society provide useful information relating to the general worldview of the people, the social status of individual members, and the balance of power in the society in which it is built. This thesis uses three case studies: ekwuru masquerade architecture, obi architecture, and the African Continental Bank (ACB) building, Enugu, over a period of time that covers the traditional, colonial and post-colonial presences, to explore how these architectures embody the worldview and identity of Igbo of Nigeria. It, however, considers a few other buildings located in Enugu and Anambra states to reinforce the point of the case study. It argues that to understand these architectures and how they function as carriers of Igbo ontology requires first an understanding of Igbo worldview that informed their construction, as such worldview have different conception of architecture from the Western notion of architecture.
