Abstract
The LIC-310 prestressed adjacent box-beam bridge was removed on July 2007 after 27 years of services because of serious corrosion, cracking, and spalling of its beams observed during its inspections. A number of its beams were examined through visual inspection and the forensic investigation. The investigation revealed that the amount of chloride at different locations of the tested beams was greater than the threshold level. The compressive strength of concrete obtained by both destructive and nondestructive methods exceeded the minimum required concrete compressive strength of 5500 psi. Furthermore, the tensile capacity of prestressing strands was much lower than the requirements for all but one beam. Further investigation after cutting the beams revealed the existence of further corrosion, cracking, and spalling in the beams. Besides, strand cover, surface, and overall conditions of the beams detected by GPR were closely comparable to other destructive and nondestructive findings. Also, it was learned that the beams were built close to specifications. Finally, it was discovered that corrosion reduced the capacity of Beams 4, 15, and 18 as much as 34%, 41%, and 59%, respectively.
