Abstract
The fate and transport of atmospheric mercury is determined by its chemical form. Therefore it is important to characterize the mercury species in the atmosphere. The Ohio River Valley region, as identified by the Environmental Protection Agency (EPA), is in the vicinity of several coal fired power plants and other manufacturing industries, which can be considered as potential sources for mercury. The primary objective of this study was to investigate the chemical form of Hg by examining the plume events from a local coal fired utility, which is two miles north of the monitoring site. In order to accomplish this objective, plumes were modeled using AERMOD and ROME, including the effects of deposition, meteorology and chemistry. The ratios of Hg2+/(Hg2++Hg0) during the plume event, calculated by the models were compared to the observations at the monitoring site. Results of this research can be important in identifying the sources of mercury wet deposition in the Ohio River Valley.
