This study provides a qualitative analysis centered on the following question: What impediments exist to the expansion of the Brazilian automotive industry exports? In order to obtain a more realistic perspective on which factors are the most critical, this study focuses on the perceptions of managers of multinational auto producing subsidiaries located in Brazil. Primary data were collected from a survey that was sent to these companies. Only one company completed the survey and the analysis evolved into a case study. Background information includes the importance of the auto industry for the world and for Brazil and it focuses on auto exports. In addition, this research identifies and discusses a large variety of barriers to exporting. Collected data indicate that there are several barriers to the expansion of Brazilian auto industry exports and that the levels of impact of these barriers on a company’s exporting activity vary. Environmental barriers, such as domestic market attractiveness and political instability in foreign markets, which are usually difficult to control and predict, are the ones that affect a company’s exporting activity the most.
