What is STEM?

The term STEM is widely used; but the definition is rarely given. When STEM is defined, it often conflicts with other definitions. In this thesis, a number of STEM (Science, Technology, Engineering and Mathematics) definitions for academic disciplines and occupations are collected and analyzed. The high-frequency STEM disciplines, medium-frequency STEM disciplines and low-frequency STEM disciplines are determined according to their frequency of occurring. STEM definitions are analyzed according to two perspectives: educational STEM definitions are mapped into CIP codes and occupational STEM definitions are mapped into SOC codes. The objective of this research is to provide a definition for STEM that takes into consideration specific concerns and explanations of a range of different definitions from different organizations’ perspectives.
