Design and Analysis of LOOM based a-ZnO Optical Waveguide Sensors

The demand for chemical sensors has been on the rise in the past few years. This is due to the need for detecting various biological and gaseous species that pollute the atmosphere and also prove to be hazardous to the human race. The advance of sensor technology largely depends on the development of material science. Hence in the thesis, a novel material such as amorphous zinc oxide is used as the core material for building the sensor using a low optical overlap mode (LOOM) waveguide structure. This sensor is designed to calculate the optical modes for the LOOM structure using the finite element tool FEMSim®. The sensitivity of the LOOM waveguide sensor for gaseous and aqueous detection is calculated both numerically and analytically in comparison with a traditional waveguide sensor. Owing to its excellent sensitivity, it is useful to determine how the optical fields propagate in this structure. Hence the design is further analyzed for a full wave propagation using the finite difference time domain (FDTD) modeling tool FULLWAVE®. Finally, to test the sensor‟s capability in practical working conditions, it is subjected to a tolerance analysis in 2D, 3D and periodic form by introducing a waveguide anomaly (blip) in the sensor design.
