Developing Controlled-release Hydrogen Peroxide for On-site Treatment of Organic Pollutants in Urban Storm Runoff

Abstract Details

2011, Master of Science (MS), Ohio University, Environmental Studies (Arts and Sciences).
The study aim was to develop a controlled-release system (CRS) as part of an in situ chemical oxidation (ISCO) scheme designed for on-site treatment of organic pollutants in urban runoff. Controlled-release hydrogen peroxide (CR-HP) solids were manufactured by dispersing fine sodium percarbonate (Na2CO3•1.5 H2O2) granules in a paraffin wax matrix. Release kinetics and treatment efficiencies of CR-HP for BTEX, which are common gasoline compounds, were investigated through a series of column tests. Release data indicated that the CR-HP could continually release hydrogen peroxide (H2O2) in flowing water at controlled rates over 276-1756 days, and the release rates could be adjusted by changing the mixing ratios of sodium percarbonate and wax matrices. However, an additional column test implies that the BTEX concentration in effluent was low due to evaporation and absorption, rather than going through the CR-HP and CR-HP/UV systems.
