Abstract Details

Metal removal rates for nine metals (Al, Cd, Cr, Cu, Fe, Mn, Ni, Pb and Zn) of the exfiltration trench, a Best Management Practice (BMP) used by Ohio Department of Transportation (ODOT) for stormwater, were investigated through a site investigation in Reno, Ohio. The investigation studied runoff (influent) going into the trench, effluent from the trench and metal characteristics of the initial and final trench materials. Study period included pre maintenance and post maintenance phases and a reconstruction phase. Modified event mean metal removals for the nine metals prior to clogging (pre maintenance) ranged from 7.8%- 52.1% and for post maintenance ranged from no removal to 24.8% for the original trench. Overall pre maintenance metal removal was 35.5% and overall no removal was achieved for post maintenance. The reconstructed trench constructed with modifications to avoid extraneous flows had metal removal range from 34.6% to 74.5% with a mean metal removal of 59.7%. Initial filter sand material released metal concentrations to filtrating water but final sand released more metals than the initial. This infers that initially retained metal can be released in later events.
