Payment for Forest Environmental Services (PFES) is a forest conservation scheme that Vietnam has been in the process of implementing since 2008, the first two years of which was piloted in Lam Dong and Son La province. Since the project also targeted reducing poverty in communities who protected forests, the question about the impacts of the project on the livelihoods of the participating households and the implications for their livelihood strategies needs to be addressed. This case study of Da Nhim Commune of Lam Dong Province, therefore, examines how livelihoods for households participating in the PFES project in the commune changed through the introduction of the project. Drawing on the sustainable livelihoods framework, I investigated the relationship between payment for forest environmental services and recent adaptation of livelihood strategies among the participating households. Through the mixed-method approach using household survey and in-depth interview with 30 K’Ho ethnic households in the commune, the research shows that improvements in financial capital were made possible while the access to natural capital decreased. There was evidence about the use of the PFES income for agricultural intensification in half of the households. However, widespread livelihood diversification was not observed. It is recognized that changing livelihoods is a complex process; therefore, livelihoods should be considered in a wider context. The variables contributing to the trajectories of livelihoods in Da Nhim derive from various cross-cutting local socio-economic, cultural and institutional factors. The thesis concludes with implications and recommendations for PFES policies for livelihood strategies in Vietnam and calls for further research on the topic.
