This research sought to broaden the knowledge and scholarly literature about teenage, female, Christian magazines for female teenagers and the images of femininity that are portrayed therein. Results from a content analysis of two Christian magazines targeting young girls and Seventeen magazine were compared to see if a wider understanding of female beauty was portrayed in the Christian magazines. The study included every image of a female in a composite year for Brio, Brio and Beyond and Seventeen. Findings showed the Christian magazines offered higher percentages of images showing teenagers in diverse roles and without make up in diverse roles than Seventeen. The Christian magazines showed a wider range of body sizes than Seventeen. However, Seventeen has a higher percentage of non-white women than the Christian magazines. Seventeen had a much higher percentage of advertising, and this may explain the prevalence of images that portray glamorized older women. The Christian magazines featured more realistic images of females in a variety of professions and roles that are consistent with feminist theory’s call for empowering women and not subjecting them to a narrow definition of female beauty.
