Engaging in evidence based practice (EBP) is the standard of care in Athletic Training. To clearly establish the use of EBP, Athletic Trainers (AT) must establish positive outcomes as a result of an intervention. However, a patient must adhere to an intervention approach to evaluate the outcomes. A patient centered approach can increase the likelihood of positive outcomes by improving the patient-clinician relationship. Trust is a primary component of a good patient-clinician relationship but there is no known measure of the patient-AT Trust relationship. The purpose of this study is to develop and validate a patient-AT instrument using a mixed-methods research design. Interviews with patients and ATs were conducted to understand trust in the context of these types of intervention. The information was used to generate a series of items that were then assessed using exploratory factor analyses and Rasch modeling. The new instrument was further validated by using convergent techniques.
