Reconciliation: Essays

Hoffacker, William G.

Abstract Details

2014, Master of Arts (MA), Ohio University, English (Arts and Sciences).
This thesis is a collection of five personal essays, the last of which is divided into four chapters. The essays chart the author's development and relationships with his family members, most notably his parents. Beyond the themes of family and childhood, the subject of religion and its role in the author's life are deeply explored. In the introduction, the author writes about the importance of questions for essayists. He describes the concept of cognitive and emotional dissonance needed to fuel a good essay that investigates the self. Through this explorations of dissonance—important questions, problems, and contradictions—the gap between the personal and the universal may be overcome, and the reader may relate to the author's interpretation of his own experiences.
