Do Youth Coaches and High School Coaches Meet the Minimum Standard for Concussion and Cervical Spine Management?

Context: The projected occurrence of sports-related concussions is 1.6 to 3.8 million each year. An athletic trainer is present at only a fraction of these events, leaving the responsibility of injury care decisions to the coaches. Currently, there is no tool to evaluate coaches' knowledge regarding management of concussions or cervical spine injuries. The purpose of this thesis was to develop and validate a concussion and cervical spine certification examination to be used to measure the amount of knowledge acquisition in youth and high school coaches. Design: A multiphase developmental design. Outcomes: Ten individuals who were determined to be experts in concussion and cervical spine management were used to determine content area weighting based on current concussion and cervical spine position statements. Exam items were written and reviewed for appropriateness. Items were transferred to Qualtrics. Thirty youth and high school coaches with a mean age of 32.9 years completed the 50-item exam. Twenty five of the original 50 items met item difficulty and discrimination psychometric properties. A finalized blueprint could not be completed because the minimum number of items needed for each content area was not met.
