Heuristic for Multi-type Component Assignment Problems through the Birnbaum Importance

Abstract Details

2014, Master of Science (MS), Ohio University, Industrial and Systems Engineering (Engineering and Technology).
This thesis proposes a heuristic for solving multi-type component assignment problems (CAP) to maximize the whole system reliability. Birnbaum importance (BI) is applied in this thesis to measure the importance of positions in a system. By comparing BI values for each type position, the most importance position can be determined. When the larger the BI value, the more important the related positions is. The most important position is assigned the right type component with the largest reliability. Both small and large systems are used to illustrate the performance and effectiveness of the proposal heuristic method. The results show the accuracy and computational efficiency of the proposed method, compared to other methods, including mathematical programming, enumeration, and randomization.
