Abstract
Categorization researchers have typically focused on how well humans can learn categories defined with visual stimuli. In particular, Bourne (1970) investigated how well individuals learn four categories defined in terms of logical rules (i.e., conjunction). Vigo, Barcus, Doan, and Pinegar (2015) extended this work by investigating all 16 possible modal categories. Further, several theories have been successfully developed to model how well humans learn to categorize visual stimuli. However, few researchers have focused on how well humans categorize auditory stimuli. To address this, we applied the experimental paradigm from visual categorization research to auditory categorization research. Specifically, we extended Bourne (1970) and Vigo et. al (2015) to investigate category learning using auditory stimuli. We predicted and explained our results with a leading theory and formal model of categorization behavior (GIST; Vigo, 2013, 2014).
