A growing literature base indicates that the dynamic interaction between home and school contexts is an important contributor to children’s school success. One such interactive factor investigated for its potential to help shape child academic and behavioral performance in school is the quality of the relationship between the parent and the teacher. Despite a robust literature base pointing toward the negative consequences of relational conflict on child school outcomes, no investigations have examined the negative components of parent-teacher interactions, specifically facets of conflict. The current study intended to develop a psychometrically sound measure of parent-teacher conflict following empirically-validated procedures of initial scale development. A 17-item one-factor measure emerged that appeared to have strong initial psychometric properties representing the Parent-Teacher Conflict Scale (PTCS). For purposes of establishing initial criterion validity, the PTCS was compared to an extant scale measuring facets of the parent teacher relationship and demonstrated a strong association. For purposes of construct validity and initial scale validation, theoretically informed variables were then investigated as they associated with the PTCS. As reported by the teacher, student behavior, student academic competence, and the student-teacher relationship were all uniquely associated with parent-teacher conflict in expected directions. Without future research replicating the reliability and validity of the PTCS, it is premature to speculate on clinical implications of this work. However, in the event findings from subsequent studies support the psychometric properties of the PTCS, it has the potential to provide clinicians information that could inform enhancements to improve students experiences in school and potential for success.
