The spin crossover phenomenon has drawn enormous attention for its possible application as bistable molecules in nanoscale devices. This phenomenon is found primarily in metal ions with d4-d7 electronic configurations in octahedral ligand field, however, spin crossover has been reported for some Ni(II) d8 complexes in the solid-state. Structural changes such as tetragonal modulation play important role in spin crossover, unfortunately, for most Ni(II) spin crossover complexes, structural information from X-ray crystallography is not available. Among the various candidates of Ni(II) complexes exhibiting this anomalous behavior, the complex [Ni(detu)4]Cl2, where detu = N,N'-diethylthiourea, has attracted our focus. This complex displays spin crossover as a response to variation of both temperature and pressure. This study aims to investigate the spin equilibrium in this complex by conducting X-ray crystallography, DFT and TD-DFT calculations. Moreover, the thermochromic effect at low temperature has been investigated as well, and TGA and DSC measurements have been obtained. FTIR spectra of [Ni(detu)4Cl]Cl and free detu ligand have been interpreted and assigned.
