Strengthening Communication with the University Students regarding Sexual Assault: Website as a Tool to Provide Support

Abstract Details

2015, Master of Arts (MA), Ohio University, Communication and Development Studies (International Studies).
Sexual assault on campus remains a public health issue that affects the mental and physical health of college students. Since most college students have free internet access and are savvy web users, it is important to ensure that the university web contents communicate sexual assault service related information effectively. This study uses quantitative document analysis of websites and qualitative interviews to understand the role website contents can play for sexual assault response. Results reveal that although the internet is identified as a very important means of communication, the quality of the contents remain a concern. Most universities' web contents emphasize legal-based information rather than health, well-being, and campus-specific concerns. Concerns and needs of minority groups like LGBTQ, disabled, and international students are rarely addressed. The results of this study provide useful insights about the support that sexual assault survivors need to receive through the university websites.
