Exploring the Influence of Urban Land Use and Land Cover Change on Land Surface Temperature Using Remote Sensing: A Case Study of Cuyahoga County, OH

Abstract Details

2016, Master of Science (MS), Ohio University, Geography (Arts and Sciences).
Exploring the influence of urban green spaces and built-up surface on thermal patterns remains central to urban planning. This research investigated to what degree does urban green space modify waste heat surface (WHS). To address the research question, a three phase methodology was followed: 1) monitoring Land Use and Land Cover (LULC) changes in the Cuyahoga County from 2007, 2011 to 2015; 2) deriving WHS from thermal infrared (TIR) images and analyze WHS spatiotemporal patterns; and 3) examining relationships between LULC changes and WHS. The results indicated that forest land and residential were the two dominant LULC types. Green spaces and built-up areas presented similar amounts of coverage. WHS was more intensive in the city core of Cleveland, and decreased progressively to the outskirts. Overall, the WHS cooled down dramatically from 2007 to 2015. Almost all green space contributed to surface cooling, while built-up contributed to surface heating. Built-up areas appeared to cool down surface temperature slightly in 2011. It is expected that this study would provide critical feedback to the ongoing Cuyahoga County Greenspace Plan that could support policy review and guide the future implementation.
