Abstract Details

2017, Doctor of Philosophy (PhD), Ohio University, Chemistry and Biochemistry (Arts and Sciences).
This dissertation reports the preparation and discussion of photonastic polymer mats and photoactive index changing hybrid materials starting from the molecular dopants to material properties. All homemade equipment designs are discussed to give contest for experimentation. Specifically, for photonastic polymer mats the macro scale bending, SEM as well as DMA experiments are collected and analyzed thus demonstrating the feasibility of photothermal materials. Further, these experiments yield valuable information in order to develop a mechanistic understanding of the mechanical effects. Likewise, for Photoactive hybrid materials the diffraction efficiency, angle-dependent diffraction efficiency, and photochromic conversion were collected as well as Kramers-Kronig and Kogelnik calculations performed. The data was analyzed to identify important consideration for development of future photochromic index changing materials. In conclusion, the findings presented herein are compared to other literature reports to give context for how these materials expand the knowledge in the community.
