Autism spectrum disorder (ASD) is an issue that is inappropriately framed and stigmatized in a culture that continues to view disability as an abnormality. This qualitative phenomenological research study, conducted by a native researcher, examined 15 mothers’ experiences with stigma directed towards their children diagnosed with ASD in Jeddah, Saudi Arabia. This research also examined mothers’ perceptions of the positive/negative roles of culture and educational and health institutions played in this regard. For the purpose of this study, epoch, phenomenological reduction, imaginative variation, and synthesis were utilized. The researcher’s analysis revealed five themes describing the experiences of mothers whose children are diagnosed with ASD as they navigated the cultural stigma associated with their children’s diagnosis of ASD. The five themes included: mothers’ concerns, mothers’ responses, partners’ challenges, accessing resources, and the responses of others. Finally, in this study, the researcher addressed the major potential implications regarding issues of stigma in Saudi Arabia and provides recommendations for further study.
