Abstract
In this thesis I examine Stephen Darwall’s theory of the second-personal standpoint. Darwall argues that moral obligation can be vindicated through the second-personal standpoint. I draw on the criticisms made by philosophers including, Michael Smith, Jada Strabbing, Tamar Schapiro, Douglas Lavin, and Herlinde Pauer-Studer to show weakness in Darwall’s theory, and I develop my own criticisms. I break the examination of his theory into three sections, the first being about second-personal reasons, the second section being about moral obligation, and the third section being about the subjects of the second-personal standpoint.
