Abstract
Simulation has been extensively used in various studies to optimize the healthcare facility today. However, the simulation models built for the healthcare industry in the past are mostly made using a model-driven approach. The simulation models made using model-driven approach are not easy to use and modify by someone who is not familiar with simulation tools. To address this shortcoming, the focus of the present research is to create a data-driven simulation model of operating rooms. The focus is to create a simulation model that can be applied to create a simulation model of any operating room unit. For this purpose, the simulation model is built with the combination of customized objects and data-driven add-ins. Four flexible simulation add-ins were built in C# to create a simulation model of the operating rooms from the CSV data files. The datadriven simulation model of the operating rooms was built from the real data. The results of average patient time at each location in the unit were analyzed and reported. The schedule utilization of operating rooms, Pre-ops and PACUs (Post Anesthesia Care Unit) were also analyzed. It was observed that customized objects are reusable and can be easily reconfigured to create other operating room simulation models. It was also observed that flexible OR Add-ins created in this research are not limited to the operating rooms and can be used to create another kind of simulation model as well.
