The current research investigates when and why White Americans of high versus low socioeconomic status (SES) report prejudice against racial/ethnic minorities. It is hypothesized that the nature of stereotypes about the outgroup (i.e., as competitive or as disadvantaged) will moderate the relationship between socioeconomic status and prejudice. Specifically, low-SES White Americans are predicted to exhibit greater prejudice towards racial/ethnic outgroups characterized as competitive, due to perceptions of realistic threat to the ingroup’s resources. High-SES White Americans, on the other hand, are predicted to exhibit greater prejudice towards racial/ethnic outgroups characterized as disadvantaged, due to a lack of empathy for these groups. Consistent with predictions, Study 1 found that SES correlated positively with prejudice toward racial/ethnic minority groups stereotyped as disadvantaged. Inconsistent with predictions, however, SES was uncorrelated with prejudice toward racial/ethnic minority groups stereotyped as competitive, perhaps because a suboptimal measure of “competitiveness” was used. Study 2 experimentally manipulated outgroup stereotypes as competitive versus disadvantaged and incorporated measures of the hypothesized realistic threat and empathy mediators. None of the hypotheses in Study 2 were supported, and possible reasons for this are discussed.
