Self-Compassion and Licensed Professional School Counselors: A Phenomenological Study

Abstract Details

2019, Doctor of Philosophy (PhD), Ohio University, Counselor Education (Education).
I conducted a study on self-compassion among middle school licensed professional school counselors (LPSCs) in three central Ohio suburban school districts using a phenomenological qualitative research design. Purposeful, convenient, and snowball sampling were used to identify LPSCs licensed by the Ohio State Department of Education in the selected districts. Semi-structured interviews were held in the LPSCs offices before or during school hours in two school districts as scheduled by the research participants and in the third school district the interviews were held in a central office conference room. Data analysis included the phenomenological procedures of an “Epoche,” phenomenological reduction, imaginative variation, and synthesis. Eight themes related to self-compassion were identified through data analysis including professional pathway, school counseling philosophies, crisis situations, crisis coping and recovery strategies, self-compassionate LPSC, contexts for self-compassion, compassion for others, and self-compassion advice. Implications and recommendations for LPSCs, school counseling students, and counselor educators are presented along with suggestions for future research on the topic.
