Abstract
High density polyethylene (HDPE) pipes have been commonly used for various applications such as water transport, sewer mains and surface drainage. These pipes are characterized by their flexibility and being more favorable to install due to its lighter weight when compared to alternatives such as steel and concrete pipes. Since the pipes are known for their flexibility, they are also expected to deform as the surrounding soils deform. Improper installations of the pipes (poor backfilling, and low compactions) are known to be the main reasons behind their deflections. The Ohio Department of Transportation (ODOT) specifies a deflection limit of 7.5% for the pipe’s inner vertical diameter. If a conduit deflection exceeds this limit, the pipe must be replaced or remediated. A technique called re-rounding could serve as a possible solution to remediate the pipe’s deflections and bring it back to its original cross-sectional shape. To this date, no study on re-rounding has been reported in the literature, this served as a motivation to investigate the impacts of re-rounding on the deflected pipes and the surrounding soils. This thesis aims to examine the vertical deflections of two HDPE pipes in a controlled field experiment when buried under 10 feet of backfill materials, ODOT Item 304 and Sand Type 2. The surrounding soil was left uncompacted to reduce the pipe’s resistance against deformation. Re-rounding was then performed on the pipe to study its impact on the vertical deflections and to examine the maximum percent deflection in the vertical diameter that re-rounding was able to recover.
