Background: Reports suggest that over 300 million people are affected by depression each year, leading to its rise as the leading cause of disability. The literature regarding the relationship between vitamin D deficiency, mental health, and health-related quality of life yields inconclusive results. Theater is an understudied area of research, especially in terms of mental and physical health. Theater personnel can be involved in physically demanding tasks and works for long hours which could lead to lower self-reported health related quality of life and higher reports of mental health issues. This project focuses on theater personnel due to the lack of research surrounding such a specialized area. Purpose: The purpose of this project was to determine if there is a relationship between vitamin D deficiency risk, mental health symptom severity (specifically depression), and health-related quality of life in theater personnel. Methods: Participants were invited to contribute in the study (an online Qualtrics survey) via an email link. The Qualtrics survey contained four primary parts including [1] general demographics, [2] a vitamin D questionnaire, [3] the 12-Item Short Form Health Survey version 2, and [4] the PROMIS – Emotional Disturbance – Depression Short Form 8b questionnaire. Participants were categorized as either a high risk for vitamin D deficiency or a low risk for vitamin D deficiency based on their answers to the second portion of the Qualtrics survey, the vitamin D questionnaire. The results to parts three and four were then compared to their group to determine significant findings. A total of 75 theater personnel (19 male, 50 female, 6 prefer not to answer, mean age = 28 ± 6.8 years) participated in the online Qualtrics anonymous questionnaire. The participants had 10.1 ± 6.4 years of theater experience. Results: Of the sample, 68 participants (90.7%) were placed in the high risk for vitamin D deficiency group based on the vitamin D questionnaire. The PROMIS Depression T-score mean ± standard deviation for the low and high-risk groups were 63.49 ± 2.85 and 57.23 ± 8.16, respectively. The SF-12 mental component summary scores for the low and high-risk groups were 29.31 ± 5.01 and 38.67 ± 9.68, respectively. Both groups were found to have greater mental health severity as compared to the national norm. The SF-12 physical component summary scores for the low and high-risk groups were 59.76 ± 5.36 and 54.57 ± 6.67, respectively. The T-scores for the physical component summary scores indicate that the physical quality of life was the same or better than the national norm. Conclusion: The results indicate that those in theater tend to have a greater physical quality of life, but poor mental quality of life as compared to the national norm. Healthcare in a theater setting should have a strong mental health support system to ensure artists are properly treated.
