The Life Participation Approach to Aphasia (LPAA) promotes re-engagement of people with aphasia (PWA) and their caregivers in activities that are relevant to their lives. In Malaysia, the field of speech-language pathology is relatively new and opportunities for applying the LPAA have not been documented. The objectives of the study are to: (a) describe aphasia intervention practices among SLPs in Malaysia, (b) determine the knowledge about and extent of application of the LPAA among Malaysian SLPs, (c) identify challenges and resources that affect aphasia management and applications of the LPAA, and (d) explore SLPs’ recommended strategies for improving aphasia rehabilitation and application of the LPAA in Malaysia. We employed a mixed method design. We gathered data from a compilation of SLP registries, background information questionnaires, SLPs’ responses to the LPAA Perception Scale, transcripts of in-depth interviews with SLPs, and fieldnotes developed by the primary investigator. Thirty-one participants completed the study protocol. We report about the demographics of Malaysian SLPs, the foci and policies of related service delivery organizations, and resources available for aphasia management, including human, financial, and physical resources. Results indicate that most Malaysian SLPs lack knowledge about the LPAA, yet to they intuitively agree with it and even apply LPAA principles in their clinical practice to some extent. Limited human resources were reported to be one of the greatest challenges for advancing the LPAA. Potential strategies relevant to improving aphasia rehabilitation and applications of the LPAA in Malaysia were explored.
