Communication in a Technologically Mediated Hookup Culture: Experiences and Expectation Fulfillment of Mobile Dating and Hookup App Users

Abstract Details

2019, Master of Arts (MA), Ohio University, Sociology (Arts and Sciences).
In this study, I investigate how mobile dating and hookup app user attributes, attitudes, and communication tactics influence the degree to which their expectations are fulfilled and the overall positivity of their match experience. The findings show gender differences in predicting expectation fulfillment and positive experience ratings. For men, viewing mobile dating and hookup apps as enabling more control over user experiences leads to less expectation fulfillment, while being a passive communicator predicts greater fulfillment and positive experiences with matches. For women, expectations of dating, having conversations about expectations, and viewing these apps as entities for controlling their experience are all predictors of expectation fulfillment and positive experience. These findings indicate that mobile dating and hookup apps are utilized and navigated in more complex ways than presented by broader cultural narratives, as individual user attitudes and communication strongly influence the way they are perceived by other users and their subsequent experience. This study concludes with a discussion of limitations, future directions, and implications of the findings.
