Design, Fabrication, and Testing of a Variable Stiffness Device for Seismic Isolation of Acceleration-Sensitive Equipment

Abstract Details

2019, Master of Science (MS), Ohio University, Individual Interdisciplinary Program.
Control over the response of structures and their contents to seismic excitation has been a goal of engineers for hundreds of years. By implementing isolation strategies, base acceleration and inter-story drift can be reduced with subsequent prevention of plastic deformation and possible structure collapse. Recently, a greater focus has been placed upon protecting acceleration-sensitive equipment from input motions. This shift in methodology is due to the proliferation of delicate equipment, coupled with an ever expanding knowledge of the effects of seismic responses. The purpose of this thesis is to introduce a variable stiffness device (VSD) specifically designed to protect equipment through seismic isolation. The system is capable of producing a positive, variable stiffness passively in order to shift the natural frequency of the isolated components from the dominant frequency of the seismic inputs. Additionally, the system is capable of producing a variable negative stiffness passively in order to produce desirable apparent weakening characteristics. Mathematical models were generated to determine the geometry of components and response of the overall system. A working prototype was fabricated and tested to validate the theoretical force-displacement profiles of the device.
