Abstract
Halogens are of vital interest in the study of nuclear physics and nuclear astrophysics; additionally, they are import in the function of society. Chlorine reacts with sodium to form sodium chloride, a vital nutrient. Two stable isotopes exist:
35
Cl and
37
Cl and the ratio of abundance in our solar system is approximately 3:1. Multiple neutron-induced reactions are possible with
35
Cl:
35
Cl(n, p),
35
Cl(n, γ), and
35
Cl(n, α); all are poorly characterized at nonthermal neutron energies. The
35
Cl(n, p) and
35
Cl(n, α) reactions are of special interest in the design of molten chloride fast reactors due to unknown neutron reaction cross sections for fast neutrons. A new scintillation detector, the Cs

:Ce, or CLYC detector, is a convenient tool for the study of these reactions with approximately 50% of the scintillator atoms as
35
Cl. A precursory experiment to study the
35
Cl(n, p) reaction was conducted utilizing a

Li-enhanced Cs

:Ce detector at Edwards Accelerator Lab employing the
9
Be(d, n) reaction to produce a white spectrum neutron source. The
9
Be(d, n) reaction is used as a neutron source for its intensity and broad spectrum. The angle of the detector relative to the neutron source was kept at a constant 0° for the duration of the experiment. Neutron energy was measured with standard time-of-flight methods. The cross section for this reaction was calculated. Probable resonances were located and matched to known resonances in literature.
