Abstract
This study explores the value of several important environmental resources: multiple-day beach recreation, state park amenities, and the information conveyance of the risk from seafood consumption. The focus is on resource issues important to the Lake Erie region in Ohio. Three alternative estimation techniques are developed and applied to non-market valuation questions. The first research adopts a random utility model (RUM) to compare single- and multiple-day values for visiting Lake Erie beaches in Ohio. Low correlation across visitors in the two categories supports separate models for single- and multiple-day trips. The results suggest that multiple-day visitors would gain substantially more per trip from a reduction in water quality advisories. The second research applies the hedonic travel costs method (HTC) to estimate the values of amenities at Ohio state parks. Four years of data are used and amenity values are compared over time. The estimates applied to Lake Erie suggest that water-based activities are highly valued and increasingly valued over time. The third research applies the contingent valuation method (CVM) to investigate the magnitude of impact that risk information has on the demand for seafood in the Mid-Atlantic region. A joint model of risk perception and seafood demand is estimated by developed methods to consistently estimate the model involving an endogeneity relationship between the two sets of behavior.
